v20 — The Now Update

May 2026

  • The /now page was created.
    • Added /now to the sidebar as News.
    • This page is for personal updates and ideas.
    • /now pages were pioneered by Derek Sivers.
  • The changelog was moved to /now.
    • It is now the /before page.
  • Created two entire themes for /before & /now.
    • They are called "past" and "future" in the CSS.
    • Not available in the Style Drawer... for now.
    • (It is a lot of work to implement them.)

  • As promised, this is the "final update" for articles.
    • Extraneous divs and classes were removed.
    • Top/Bottom .classes were changed to #ids.
    • The sun was changed to an #id as well.
    • Post Date was changed to align left.
    • Read Time was added to all future articles.
      • Older articles may be updated eventually.
    • The template for articles should stay this way.
      • Finally.

  • The Worldhub was retired.
    • It will come back after it receives an update.
    • For now, it is still accessible from the Sitemap.

  • Links has been updated into a /uses page.

v19 — The Style Update

May 2026

  • Replaced the Theme Switcher with the Style Drawer!
    • (Credit for the old Switcher still goes to sadgrlonline.)
    • A new "screen shield" helps with rapid switching.
    • This was an enormous effort; I am very happy with it.
  • More theme/style changes, with an emphasis on links.
    • Nothing substantial here.
  • Renamed "Desert Sunrise" to Golden Field.
  • Reduced the size of the sidebar tabs again.
  • .separate divs now correctly disappear at low resolutions.
  • The sun has been re-smoothed to prevent pixel jitter.
    • I am looking into a solution for this.
    • Maybe if the animation was handled by Javascript?

  • Fixed Ruby Sunset constantly resetting.

v18 — The Awakened Update

April 2026

  • Changed the name of the site to Waking World.
  • "Waking Light" (Haunted Light) is now the default theme.
    • The glass is now less transparent and more readable.
    • The glass has also been color shifted slightly.
    • The sky is a more comfortable "stormy gray" color.
  • Make subtle changes to the style of the site.
    • Reduced the padding on articles.
    • Made the glass "bezel" more visible.
    • Tightened up the shadows.
    • Reduced the gap between all containers.
    • Personally I think the site looks more "candy-like."

v17 — The Glass Update

October 2025

  • Upgraded to a modern "floating glass" design.
    • Elements are now animated and reactive.
    • Readability is better as well.
    • Replaced all fonts with Merriweather.
  • Redesigned all of the themes in the new style.
  • Updated headers and footers across the site.
  • Simplified the Files page.
  • Simplified the Links page.
  • Changed the way paragraphs work.
    • These changes only apply to articles, not .subarticles.
    • Like a word processor, paragraphs indent naturally.
    • They also create their own "line breaks."
    • This fixes an issue with overusing < br > on articles.
  • Updated gem.gif again.
    • Smoothed the colors out (this took forever).
    • Larger, less distracting, and they have real shadows now.

  • Pulled the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license from the World Hub.
    • By omission, it is now ARR (All Rights Reserved).
    • This was a personal decision.
  • Created a new "gem" graphic that actually looks like a pushpin.
    • Adjusted the position of text to match.
    • Resized the navigation buttons again.
  • Turned Cloudy Sky into its own color theme.
    • Went for a warm summer theme to contrast the sky.
    • Tilted the magenta colors over to orange.
    • Gradients shift towards red or yellow for a tropical feel.
    • Now works as a true "light mode" version of Dawn Sky.
  • Gave the World Hub a fresh new style.
    • Centering the badges was a high priority for me.
    • There's no new CSS here, just mixing different containers.
  • Merged Recent Stream and Featured Content into one div.
  • Made line-height fixed instead of relative.
  • Added a text-shadow on badges for readability.

    • v15 — The Rainbow Update

    December 2024

    • Huge style update.
    • Added a dithered mountain to the background, to go with the clouds.
    • Made the "sun" at the top of the screen fixed to the background, like it used to be.
    • Gave every theme a distinct color scheme.
      • Made the header and text colors more distinct for Dawn Sky.
      • Cloudy Sky remains as a "light mode" version of Dawn Sky, because I like it.
      • Night Sky has a deep blue color scheme.
      • Sunny Sky is a "light mode" version of Night Sky
      • Dusk Sky has a deep purple color scheme.
      • Sea Sky has a green and aquamarine color scheme.
      • Alien Sky has a bright and flashy CYMK color scheme.
      • No alternate backgrounds are planned for Dusk Sky, Sea Sky, or Alien Sky. Any new color schemes that I add are also likely to fall into this pattern.
    • Tightened up the layout of the site.
      • Most elements are now closer together by about a pixel.
      • Made the top margin thinner, shifting everything upwards.
      • Rotated the nav elements back a bit.

    v14.5

    December 2024

    • Prepared the Theme system to handle future updates.
    • Switched to a cleaner, more stylized style.
      • Replaced all of the background images with gradients; this will make the site load much faster, and will also allow for color changing shenanigans in the future.
      • Slightly tweaked the colors of all elements.
      • Adjusted the position of the nav bar.
      • Rotated the nav bar pins by another degree.

    v14 — The Script Update

    September 2024

    • Fixed a bug on mobile where links didn't respect bullet points.
      • "display: inline-block;" was the culprit.
    • Rewrote the Theme system from the ground up to alternatively check for the presence of a theme tag in localStorage in the head tag and body tag of every page on the site. This makes it so that the theme can load dynamically on the page AND load preemptively before the page renders the background.
      • This completely fixes the background flickering!
      • It required editing every html page on the site, so this gets to be an update all on its own.

    September 2024

    • Fixed a dead link issue with the CC BY-SA 4.0 licenses.
      • Also made the indicator under each article smaller.
    • Made layout adjustments to all of the main pages of the site.
      • Made this page much more compact.
      • Added a title banner back to the Files page.
      • Used the .pop class to indent many paper tabs.
    • Made many changes to the style css and background images.
      • Tweaked crossword.png, the paper texture, to be more pronounced.
      • Tweaked binding.png, the tab texture, to be more subtle.
      • Very slightly blurred lowlinen.png, the badge texture.
      • Slightly darkened var(--maroon), the header text color.
      • Changed the edges of each paper tab to have transparent drop shadows rather than opaque border lines.
      • Made all of the tabs on the paper tabs five pixels thinner. Believe it or not, this is a very significant change.
      • Made the padding on articles five pixels thinner to match.
      • Made all of the tabs slightly less round, to contrast the nav bar.
      • Made the nav bar one pixel thinner to perfectly center the pins.
      • Made the nav bar shadow much more transparent.
      • Made the nav bar animation faster.
      • Implemented a more sophisticated bullet point pin system using li:before instead of list-style. As a side effect, all lists are slightly spaced out and easier to read.

    • Renamed Sunny Day/Cloudy Day to Sunny Sky/Cloudy Sky.
    • Added new themes: Dusk Sky, Sea Sky, and Alien Sky.
    • Changed the floppy disk images to better reflect content.
    • Fixed CSS issues on the Files page.
    • Fixed a major error that made the Night Sky theme unusable.
    • Partially fixed the flickering when using an alternate theme.
      • The devil is in the details here. Chromium browsers are better at loading the JavaScript after the CSS finishes loading, resulting in less flickers. Firefox is slightly worse about it. It's impossible to fix without moving to a PHP server and cookies, something that isn't supported natively on Neocities, and it would require a complete rewrite of the Theme system. It's just not in the cards for right now.
